The Most Romantic Spot In Athens.
Without a doubt, climb Mount Lycabettus – starting in the mid-late afternoon.
It’s a steep and somewhat sweaty hike so, if it’s meant to be, your date will not be phased by the fact you’ll both be gasping for air on occasion (there is an underground cable car for those with accessibility concerns)
- Stop regularly to take in the views. Take a map with you and acquire brownie points for highlighting the city’s hot spots – or identify places you’d like to explore next. Maybe the Ancient Agora – the feature photo..
- Don’t make my mistake: Take plenty of water and top up your sun lotion! (Don’t lose your phone either – or you’ll have no photos to share!)
Realistically from the bottom to the top an hour should be enough time (although it depends how many times you stop – if you’re alone it’s probably do-able in 30-45 minutes) Whether you’re alone or in a couple, you could also take a book, a towel to sit on, and some snacks and make the climb part of the experience.
- Once you reach the top, take a quiet moment inside the tiny church and then embrace the panoramic views.
- Get yourself an outside table in the restaurant, ideally one tucked away yet hanging over the edge of the cliff and, killer moment, watch the sun set over Athens and the Mediterranean – whilst enjoying a lovely local bottle of red.
No photo I take could ever do this justice anyway – for a visual feast, click here.
It really is something you need to see, feel, smell and enjoy for yourself.
