How can a pre-meditated attack, fuelled by pre-judged hatred, driven by an ideological religious view be called anything other than homophobic?
The atrocious events that happened in one of Orlando’s gay nightclubs is, without doubt, an LGBT hate crime. Anyone who argues differently clearly has no understanding of the issues many LGBT members still face today.
Yes, great advancements have been made globally in respect to equality legislation, and yes, so-called Islamic State have declared it an act of terrorism in their name. Neither these points detract from the fact that the murderer’s father has stated he had previously got angry by seeing two men kissing nor the fact he walked into a nightclub, which explicitly serves the LGBT community, to open fire. It was an unprecedented, co-ordinated and malicious attack on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people specifically. He even used weaponry which the authorities describe as being able to have the absolute worst effect on the victims. There are no coincidences here.
Whilst there’s no disputing that it was also an act of domestic terrorism, it is not a choice of one or the other; a hate crime OR a terror attack. An act of terrorism can be targeted to a specific community group based on prejudices which the terrorist holds, as is clearly the case here.
Furthermore, if it weren’t a hate crime targeting our community, why did he pass other late night mainstream venues and target Pulse specifically? There were much busier venues open in the area at that time.
It’s insulting to our global LGBT community for this to be branded as anything other than hate.
I spent yesterday in shock; deeply saddened by the event. Today I’m livid that there are people out there who refuse to even acknowledge what it was; a pre-meditated attack, fuelled by pre-judged hatred, driven by an ideological religious view.
In this case, the prejudged view was categorically homophobic. To suggest otherwise only highlights your own ignorance.
