Local Man Fasts for Charity
Self-proclaimed chunky monkey Andy Neale from Lancashire has decided to fast in order to raise funds for international development charity, Progressio. The idea came as news broke that Preston and Fylde’s water supply was contaminated with a bug. This meant local residents have been advised not to consume their water unless they boil it first.
‘I’ve been amazed by the sheer ignorance and arrogance of peoples’ responses on social media’ says Andy, who will celebrate his 30th birthday in the developing nation of Nicaragua. ‘People complaining, asking for compensation, saying they can’t cope. 783 million people do not have access to basic clean water worldwide, 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (toilets) and, more worryingly, nearly a million people on this planet die, every year, from water, sanitary and hygiene related issues. Us Lancashire folk are hardly facing major hardship! The figures aren’t much better for individuals being able to eat the daily recommendations globally either,’ he continues. ‘Even across the UK there are an estimated 13.5 million of us living in poverty; not being able to manage three healthy meals a day… That’s nearly quarter of our population. It’s shocking’
Andy’s plan is to fast for 24 hours if his fundraising total reaches £250 (or for 48 hours if the total exceeds £500). There is just three weeks to raise this total (the fast is scheduled to start on Monday September 7th) His overall target is £1000 but he has other plans including a city centre LGBT event in his home town during Preston’s Freshers’ Week.
He finishes by saying, ‘I’ve chosen to fast because I know not many of my friends, family or peers will have the money to sponsor me, so at least by fasting, I will hopefully make them aware of some of the shocking figures regarding poverty. I’m confident many will share this story too so it’ll at least reach those who can sponsor the cause.’
